As bewildering as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment within America could have minimal awareness regarding him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who must quickly flee to another nation to evade secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, shown by providing food and sheltering. Christ's response to violence is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his method regarding offenses states that when an individual takes your coat you ought to provide them your pullover too.
The evident and straightforward reality that the Jesus in biblical accounts advocates for a type of extreme compassion focused on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith rather a controversial faith: appealing to the populace, but owing to its natural unconventionality demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Finest Within Us
So I have been encouraged to see the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge in this past year.
