The Generosity of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Helped Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to reach out at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
