Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
