"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Several celebrated admirers have openly begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a close trio. Their music videos repeatedly feature them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to form a group."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed resilience demanded a new sound – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

One man left Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
